Camp Walkabout is designed to expose campers to a wide variety of outdoor activities in a fun, supportive environment, so that they may gravitate toward what interests them most and build skills with personal attention from experienced Walkabout instructors. Campers may find themselves climbing a rock face in the heart of the Tennessee River Gorge one day, canoeing on the Hiwassee River the next day, then hiking to remote waterfall for an afternoon swim the day after that. Activities will include paddle boarding, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, caving, hiking, swimming, rappelling and much more. Campers will have a chance to try their hand at everything to see where their own passion lies.
Developing more than just outdoor skills, campers will gain life skills and values as well. Activities will be conducted in small groups, allowing campers to make close new friends and build skills in communication, teamwork, trust, leadership and more. Of course it never feels like learning when you're having a blast!
The Walkabout program at Baylor School has been exposing young teens to the outdoors since 1976 and earned national acclaim along the way. Camp Walkabout will be founded on that extensive knowledge and experience in outdoor education in the greater Chattanooga area. All instructors are Walkabout veterans and Baylor alumni, and all activities will be led be a Wilderness First Responder - an 80-hour course in wilderness medical training. We aim to create an atmosphere where campers can stretch their limits while managing risk, but more than just instructors, they are mentors, leaders, and friends.
