Description
WHAT IS PHLARP?
PHLARP is a Live Action Role Playing game that is limited only by your imagination, like a video game with unlimited possibilities because your body is the controller. There are many reasons why we are different than most Larp groups. Some of those reasons include; that we are “jean-friendly”, PHLARP caters to the veteran Players as well as the newbies so that there is not a “core” group that excludes new Players, we are not period specific as our game is set in a fantasy world that is a combination of influences from many different sources, or that PHLARP allows for you to become as involved as physically as you want to be as there are non combat positions (LIKE REFEREES! WE NEED REFEREES!). Generally speaking though, we engage in combat with melee weapons, bows and LARP arrows that we have designed, soft coreless thrown weapons, birdseed packets, shields, and rarely, foam dart guns.
Once you create a character you will gain XP for being logged in, playing events, winning events, completing quests, wearing a costume, role playing, slaying wicked monsters, and more! Once you complete a series of quests designed to help you orient yourself as a first time player or as we refer to it: a Squire, then you can choose from one of six classes; Rogue, Wizard, Priest, Paladin, Ranger, and Warrior. Next, just like in a video game, you will gain levels based on your XP. As you gain levels you will also gain Ability Points which you can spend on Abilities (in PHLARP an “Abilities” is also a reference to spells) that are available to your class. The higher your level becomes the more powerful Abilities become available to you.
The rabbit hole goes really deep. So deep that is difficult to encompass everything else that it is possible to do at PHLARP into a paragraph, but to that end, other things you can do at PHLARP are; become the Lord of a Clan to fight alongside your friends, become a devastating monster, compete in 25+ events (such as Last Man Standing, Braaains!, Minion, CTF, Clan Battle, Battle for the Crown to name a few), participate in the larger campaign event, become a Warlord to have a vote on the War Council which determines which direction our Heroes will explore next, gain racial abilities, earn achievements, invade opposing keeps, gather resources, capture opposing keeps, become The Duke, multi or dual class, become a Merchant, unlock new classes, defend your keep, unlock new races, and more!

WHO PLAYS PHLARP?
There is an aspect of PHLARP that is appealing to everyone. PHLARPers range from ages 7 to 56. PHLARPers consist of thirty percent female and seventy percent male. PHLARPers come from all walks of life, social groups, cliques, races, fitness levels, cultures, and ages. PHLARPers come together under a common interest in a setting (real time sword fighting with a dash or two of role play) that when compared to today’s social networks is a return to a more traditionally personal situation.

WHY DO PEOPLE PHLARP?
PHLARPers PHLARP for many different reasons, such as for exercise, for a love of fantasy, a challenge, fun, a love of video games, to gain fame or fortune, the competition, to watch, a release of tension, to escape, to make new friends, to wield powerful magical items, the thrill of battling other Players in a real forest terrain, or to gather with friends. No matter what your reason one thing is certain; this game is PHLARPin’ awesome.

HOW DID PHLARP START AND WHAT IS ITS HISTORY?
PHLARP began in the spring of 2012 when co-creator Aaron watched the movie Role Models with his son, Danny, which sparked a conversation about experiences that Aaron had as a kid battling his friends with foam covered PVC weapons. They then built some basic weapons and attempted to recreate the experience. Next, Danny spurred the interest of a few of his friends and a group was soon formed of 10 or so teens gathering in Columbia Park, Park Hills, Missouri. After the first group was formed Aaron enlisted co-creator Jason as a team member. Subsequently Aaron & Jason decided that should they join in such an activity as hitting other people with weapons, foam or not, that such a group would need direction and organization. They saw that it would need to be safe, fair, and fun. Thus, Park Hills Live Action Role Players was born.
PHLARP hosted LARP in Columbia Park, Park Hills, Missouri, for 1.5 years and in the last year we had enormous turnouts of over 50 Players every Sunday. One Sunday out of that year we did have a turnout of only 11, but there was 10” of snow on the ground and every one of those people walked to get there, so that’s still pretty extraordinary. On the last day of hosting PHLARP in Columbia Park, Park Hills, Missouri we had a turnout of 73.
Realizing the benefits of playing on private property compared to at the park, Aaron and Jason acquired the permission of a local landowner that agreed to let us play on a wooded 8 acres that is a mere five minutes from the park. This transition was not an easy one and the creators Aaron & Jason believed it to be more beneficial in the long run, even with its risk. Since PHLARP’s arrival to Jorrvaskr (the property) we have seen an explosion of refinements, improvements, and continuity to the game of PHLARP that PHLARP has never known.
PHLARP has appeared on the cover of The Daily Journal (local paper), we have appeared for The Daily Journal on a separate occasion to battle during one of their staff meetings, we have been featured in an article written about us by The Centurion (the local high school paper), named Duct Tape Destroyers, we have fought for the Cub Scouts, and we have also raised money for the Saint Louis Children’s Hospital.

WHERE IS PHLARP PLAYED?
PHLARP plays every Saturday from 8pm-12pm at Florence Freeway in Park Hills, Missouri (Jorrvaskr). Additionally, PHLARP plays once a month on Friday from 8pm until Sunday at 7pm (the whole weekend) on the weekend with the most moonlight. We also have other unique events and benefits at various times throughout the year.
PHLARP can also be found on the web at www.phlarp.net, You Tube (search PHLARP), or Facebook
HOW MUCH MONEY DOES IT COST TO PLAY PHLARP?
The best part about PHLARP is that it is FREE to play. There is no charge.
PHLARP weapons are easy to make (we have weapons for new people) and we do sell some basic weapons. The cheapest way to acquire a weapon for PHLARP is to build one by shoving a piece of PVC or electrical conduit into a pool noodle or building a blade of camping foam and then taping it with duck tape to the electrical conduit or PVC. The PVC or electrical conduit is roughly two dollars for 8-10’ and a pool noodle is roughly two dollars.
We do sell plates of food so that people do not go hungry but it is a bargain at two dollars for a plate of food with a drink. A plate of food consists of two cheese dogs w/ buns or two ham and cheese sandwiches, with a snack cake, chips and a drink. We also have the food of champions-The Ramen. Furthermore, our breakfast sandwiches are legendary.
