Erin Layton awww omg “Back in the nest, ants take turns caring for their injured comrades, gently holding the hurt limb in place with their mandibles and front legs while intensely “licking” the wound for up to four minutes at a time.”
Ants are AWESOME. Especially at cleaning up after your dog leaves bits of food on the floor. They just come , remove the food and leave again. I have witnessed first hand one ant taking care of another ant and protecting it
I always tell the story of years ago being at the natural history museum and it had two colonies of ants divided by water. A worker ant fell in the water and clearly there was hubbub amongst the line. A soldier ant marched down the line, picked up a long stick and was trying to extend it to the drowning ant. I was amazed, tell this story to many friends who believe humans are the only beings capable of rational thought and problem solving.
I think "surprisingly high success rate" is the key word here. It may actually be the rational thing to do, the most cost effektive solution for the ants.
