reality is that in at least some states the raise was mandated by new minimum wage requirements passed as a state law that Walmart must comply with whether they receive tax cuts or not. And with both Target and Costco, fierce Walmart retail competitors, already paying higher wages,
Walmart appears to have timed the announcement of the raises and bonuses to distract the public from the fact that it was actually unexpectedly laying off thousands of employees and abruptly shuttering 63 Sam’s Club big box stores without notifying many employees in advance.
I think folks are missing the point of this article. Yes, it’s somewhat decent that they are bumping their employees up to $11 and hour, but in order for that to happen, their employees at 63 Sams Club locations had to lose their jobs altogether!!!
Walmart can tie the wage increase to the tax bill just like the administration is doing but I can tie it to the closing of 63 Sam's Club stores. And their workers didn't even know in advance.
"In some cases, employees were not told their store had closed before showing up to work on Thursday. Those employees learned their store would be closing when they found the store's doors locked and a notice announcing the closing, Sam's Club workers told Business Insider. At some stores, employees were turned away by police officers."
That money went straight to the Walmart owners pocket with no intention to create more jobs like Trump said it would. Bad thing is that Trump knows this. His pocket is lined too with the money he received from this tax break.
Experts are stating this is more likely in response to Target and other similar stores raising their starting salaries long before the tax bill was passed. Don't let them fool you folks.
Although I agree with the folks here saying that Wal-Mart has made more then enough profit over the years to pay better wages even before the tax cut, try to bear in mind that what Wal-Mart does as far as paying wages and etc. Is purely on Wal-Mart and not the government or President Trump. The new administration is doing what they can but no one can force Wal-Mart or anyone else not be greedy and share the wealth more with their employees, again that is on the company and shame on them for it.
“Over the past two years, Walmart has raised its starting hourly wages twice, to $9 and then to $10.”
Additionally, they are closing 63 Sam’s stores.
Nice try Walmart pinning this on the GOP tax plan, but that is entirely disingenuous.
And they are closing a ton of Sam’s Clubs laying off thousands of workers. Also eliminating Walmart positions with their new “Scan and Go” checkout. Walmart is a fraud.
And going to all self serve registers firing people and closing stores.THIS is the tip of the iceberg of the hell this tax bill will be bringing usd.
They are closing all of the SAMs Club stores in Alaska. That means that their employees are losing their jobs. The only people getting the $1,000 bonus are people who have worked for Walmart for at least 20 years. There has to be something hidden in the new tax bill that is causing big corporations to give these $1,000 gifts followed by layoffs. We should not be fooled.
