Jones won with 670k votes. The last time Sessions ran opposed he had 1.3 million votes and the Democrat he was facing had over 700k votes. One take away that isn't mentioned here is that Alabama voters stayed home rather than vote for Roy Moore. I highly doubt that they will do that again in 2018 and 2020
The take away should be engage the black vote. That is the only reason jones won. In every region don’t think a race is unwinable get the poc to turn out they have the power to flip elections.
I pray this is a watershed moment for black folk all over the country to show that if they do show up and vote in numbers, it makes a HUGE difference. They CAN make positive changes for themselves and the rest of us and their votes DO count when they get out and vote. Thanks to the huge numbers of black voters in Alabama that made this happen!
I love that Alabama voters shunned a child molester, but I am also sickened that so many still voted for him. He didn't lose by more than a few thousand votes, as I understand it (correct me if I am wrong here), and that is truly disgusting. That Alabama and the RNC supported an accused child molester in the first place is unforgivable. They are so desperate to protect their precious majority they will literally vote for Hitler as long as he had an R beside his name.
Thanks to all Alabama African Americans, women, and other minorities who showed up in record numbers to overwhelm the white establishment that stacked the deck against them. You are the real MVPs! Show up like you just did in 2018 and 2020 and progressives will retake the government easily! #Resist!
We are going to have to be vigilant and keep the GOP from cheating through gerrymandering and making ridiculous voter ID laws that will keep liberals (especially blacks) from voting in November 2018.
Don’t get me wrong, I am glad Jones won, but it’s far from what I would call stunning. The republicans could of run almost anybody else and won. For whatever ignorant reason they chose to run a man twice removed from public office because he is incompetent and possibly a pedophile. The man still got 48 percent of the vote.... despite all his negative attributes...
Doug Jones should find that horse that Roy Moore rode in on to cast his vote and ride that thing right into the Senate chambers. Bonus if he can somehow get the horse to urinate on McConnell.
Take #6: Democrats need to pay more attention to people of color and voting rights and access. Republicans are taking to Jim Crow era voter intimidation and suppression now that the Voting Rights Act had been gutted. It's not impossible for us to vote but they are trying to keep minorities and the poor from the polls as much as possible. Without black people, particularly women, coming out in force, Moore would have won. We need to make that a priority for 2018, 2020 and beyond.
It means that when you hand the people of Alabama a ballot that says "Democrat or Pedophile?" they are almost evenly split. Which means someone needs to wake up William Tecumseh Sherman, because he missed a spot.
Im guessing at least a few are dont let a a Harvard grad who knocks the Crimson Tide plan a rally for you. Dont have your war buddy talk about the time you went to a brothel filled with teen age girls, dont have a lifetime ban from the mall, and dont think the Constitution isnt worth the parchment its printed on....for starters. Oh, and when you talk about values, make sure you have some.
