He's qualified, he has relevant government experience, he isn't a strong partisan, and he hasn't said crazy things in the past...
What's wrong with this guy that I don't know about that would make Trump pick him?
This is a good thing. I am not a Trump fan at all, but I am a Veteran and know the VA well. You cannot expect an organization to improve if you change leaership with every presidential term, with each new secretary trying to "shake things up" and make their mark. As under secretary, he was great and honest. The VA has made strides and Shulkin as Secretary will only continue to improve the VA.
For a refreshing change, here is a qualified candidate... even a broken clock is right twice daily.
I don't suspect that there will be many times that Trump will do something praiseworthy in the next few years but when he does, he deserves credit. Who knows, maybe if he sees that being not pants on head crazy gets him love and adulation, he'll do more of that and less of the stuff that got him elected in the first place.
Maybe he picked one that's not a total looney toon, so that at least one will e confirmed quickly and he can point at his success!! "See, I picked a great man, with experience" to off-set the other 20 unqualified idiots. At least this guy has experience in the actual department that he'll be in charge of.
I've got nothing against Shulkin but he's right up there with Ben Carson as this administration's first scape goat. There hasn't ever been a legitimate play at improving veteran affairs in my lifetime and with so much money being poured into the investors market and corporate tax cuts I'm having a hard time seeing where the money is going to come from for people this far down the totem pole.
As a veteran, I am pleased that someone with experience working in the VA was elected. However, him not being a veteran himself makes wonder what is motivation for change is. Parts of the VA need to go. However the Veteran Centers the Vietnam veterans fought for should not be on the chopping block. The vet center has saved countless lives.
I'm pleasantly surprised. He seems qualified. He should get he hearing that all nominees are required - the one that hopefully all Trump's cabinet nominees should get (as did all of Obama's and prior presidents.)
But not a veteran. Will he be sensitive to the fact that veteran organizations WANT the VA to continue to operate their healthcare system. I'm an RN, a veteran, use the VA and recognize good care when I receive it. The VA provides that in the majority of cases. The care I receive from VA facilities here in the SF Bay Area is Top Notch!
Know nothing about him, but guessing he must hate veterans since that seems to be the only qualification for running a department.
Huh, actually picked and honest to goodness qualified person. What's the catch? There has to be a catch? Does he kick puppies? What?
I was fully expecting his nominee to be someone that hates veterans and wants to see them launched into the sun, or something.
As a Veteran, and someone who until recently worked in the VHA:
Dr. Shulkin has a good grasp on the health care side of the VA, and had been on since last spring after his predecessor was sent off to retirement amid scandal. Can he help fix the benefits side of VA & run the National Cemetery Administration on top of continuing the health care reformation?
Secretary McDonald has been working on reform, but he hasn't been there 2 years, and is looking at the entire VA picture - benefits, healthcare, and cemetery. Personally, I would prefer to see McDonald stay on, or another Veteran be appointed, and keep Shulkin in VHA, where his expertise is needed.
I say to those that say "Vets haven't done a good job running VA, so why do it again?" All of them were officers in the military, which is the minority in comparison to enlisted Veterans, who are also the primary user of VA healthcare and recipient of benefits.
Good pick on his part. Not a Trumpet but this is a good pick.
But you're bound to hit the ball out of the park eventually if you swing randomly enough right?
Lemme guess. This guy hates veterans and thinks we shouldn't help them?!? I mean it's safe to assume, as the track record his nominees have been on up to this point shows!
I actually think this one is decent. Not a veteran, but he is a doctor who is still seeing patients and at least knows the system.
I'm pretty sure people are just frowning every article regardless of who he picks at this point, even if it's a reasonable one. Sad. #hesyourpresidentwhetheryoulikeitornot
One okay nomination does not unmake the dozen before him.
If Trump wants to improve the country (he doesn't), he should start by A) quitting the presidency but B) recalling every other nomination he has made so far.
Trump wants a Democrat in this impossible position. Everyone who gets this position fails. It's the impossible task. What is needed is one of two things. Medicare for All, or National Health Care. This is the only way to solve this and all the other healthcare problems.
Good. Another rich old white man. That's what I want to be one day.
Not the worst choice he could have made, but I agree there needs to be a veteran at the wheel who understands what vets go through viscerally as well as intellectually.
The only competent Trump pick, save for "Mad Dog Mattis," and Mattis is going to likely end up being pulled because of his butting heads with Trump. At least in regards to the VA, there'll be a bit of normalcy.
Dear Mr Shulkin, as a wife of a 100% disabled connected Marine, I would like to tell you that the Veterans Choice Program, is a program that is not working. We are paying these people that create the approvals for our veterans care, to sit and not the intended to account the urgency of our veterans care. Our situation is my husband fell in Sept and spiritual fractured his right femur, a 1 in a 1000 type fracture. He is still not walking yet and trying to go to PTL, but the Veterans Choice Program, is holding up his care with their neglect to educate the providers in the way to file, then file this in a timely manner. We have missed 1 week of therapy already and looking at missing another 2 weeks due to the Veterans Choice Programs taking 10 more bussiness days to give the authorization for his therapy to the provider that they have received ieved from the VA Hospital. This is ridiculous, if we are going to give our 100% connected veterans a choice to go outside due to the over crowding in the VA system, it needs to be like a regular insurance group where the veteran has a card in hand and can just go to outside doctors once approved for full medical benefits. It seems we have lots of hands in a program that are causing g more issues than good.
You may contact me if you would like, I would be glad to speak with you on this matter.
Sincerely, Veterans wife
Trump has real problem with "INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING" when he goes into room he walks only in Boxers-- then ask "do I take out my pee-pee-- that is my intelligence-- the little head" :)
With no military experience -- that's a first. Maybe it's a good thing. I sincerely hope he's successful. Our veterans need much stronger, faster, more compassionate care.
Ok. So we're treating the vets so badly, really badly, just awful . The VA is a mess. And trump picks the VA under secretary to take the leadership role because he is terrific, just great, nobody better. So the VA has good people doing good work then. Ooops.
Not anyone that I would have picked, but vastly better than I feared. At least he has experience in the VA as he's currently the head of the VHA.
So all that blather today about mistreated veterans are was....blather. Got it.
Thanks for the warning .... I haven't seen a good pic by Trump yet .
They should find a qualified Vet, or he should enlist and serve, as should some of the trump boys (and girl)
