So, this is how our elderly are to be treated? If they have no money, they deserve the streets. Shame on them. Remember that when you are in her shoes, because you will be.
Umm just wait it's going to get worse wait until people are being kicked out of nursing homes because there is no more Medicare coverage to cover those days
She is not being kicked out of a nursing home, and has a offer to move to one. Her family wants her to stay in a private facility that charges that much. This has nothing to do with the government, who you voted for just that the family made a very expensive choice not knowing how long she would live.
Is the facility supposed to care for her for free? Staffing costs money, utilities cost money. Her family should take her home if they can't afford it
Shameful. We need to take care of the elderly not boot them out because of $$$. Praying for her and her family.
I had an elderly friend who lived in assisted living and unfortunately like any place you rent, if you dont' pay, you get evicted. She didnt' get evicted however her funds ran out and she moved in with her family. If gofundme gets that much money for her, what about next year? Not trying to reflect negativity, only asking obvious questions.
So she'll have to go to a nursing home that accepts her insurance or to live with her children. Unfortunately that's the business of healthcare. But I think people miss the point of it being a business that has to pay its employees. It can seem incredibly heartless but it's the same thing as walking into a grocery store with no money and expecting to get the food for free because you need it. Her children could probably do a little bit more research into an assisted living home that accepts Medicaid. This is not a punishing act.
She is fortunate to have been able to afford an assisted living facility at all. Most can't and either try to make it on their own with some help from home health services provided by medicare, move in with their child or go to a nursing home from the start.
I think she has lived a full life they should have the respect for people over 100 to allow them to live their time on earth where the choose and lower the price ... geez money hungry greedy people... GOD BLESS HER AND HER FAMILY .Shame on corporate America these elders are what made America America
OMG people who say live with kids, she is 108 so her children are not young either. Yes she can go to a nursing home but jeez have you been to one? They charge at least 10,000 a month for horrible care and no real activities. This woman has been in assisted living for 3 years and is doing well. I wish I could live on my own until 105. The fact is they planned and paid for 3 years and now are looking for help. We do not prioritize elderly in our country. It is truly sad.
She's in a private pay facility, even if she was in a Medicare/Medicaid facility she would have to spend all her money before other insurance pays. She's lucky she had enough money to stay in a nice facility for that long but she's no different than 1000's of others. Best start looking for the best facility available. Don't know why this is a story worth printing other than we are suppose to take pity on her because she's so old.
Did I read well??? They are raising $44,000 a year so she can stay at a luxury place or she'll die??? It's not the place's fault, they are not kicking her out, it's that you need to have $44,000 to live there if you want to stay, there are other places that she can go if she can affort the luxury place, for example...one of her kid's place, a cheaper apartment, ANY other place that Medicare covers, etc, etc, etc, etc and etc!!
Hopefully the facility is a part of the Medicaid waiver program and can offer her a room to stay 🙏🏻 unfortunately though it is a business and though they can reduce rates they can't offer services/care/place to live for free. It's gut wrenching and I feel for her, I've worked with the aging population for 9 years and see similar situations often.
Her daughter said she's independent and doesn't even take any medication. Wondering if she could live what time she has left with her daughter or son? I would have loved to have had my mother home with me before she passed but sadly, she was too ill.
Disgusting that Americans can be treated this way. It's bad enough their whole life savings goes to care and they end up with nothing. Then when you have nothing, they want nothing to do with you. In today's world, it's very difficult to have elderly parents live with you, most couples both work full time. It's just not that easy. Something needs to be done about this. Sad.
Assisted living and nursing homes are radically different things. Medicare pays for nursing homes but doesn't pay for assisted living. If you can't afford it, you can't stay. These assisted living facilities do not, and cannot, receive any insurance payments. Period.
I hate to be so blunt but Let her live with you or your brother-that is what many have to do that cannot afford nursing homes.
So she'll have to go to a nursing home like most people that can't live with family? I'm sorry bit assisted living is the equivalent of gated communities for the elderly that most of us will never be able to afford, it's hard to have sympathy that someone will just be getting regular services like the rest of us.
Unfortunately we are living longer and a lot of us may outlive our resources, so how do you plan for that? Some don't have children able or no one.
A person such as her can outlive their children.
Uumm so everything is gofundme nowadays?! Whats wrong w the regular facility?? Who's going to pay for my sons shoes when he outgrows them? Should i open a gofundme for that too?? Common. If u cant afford a $40k a year living arrangement then take what is more affordable. Is she going to die this year that ur raising $$ only for 1 year. Doesn't make sense
There will be thousands of stories like this as we boomers age. Many many people don't own a home to sell and have dealt with a tough economy and lost most of 401K or never had any.
Most will outlive their money.
We will have no place to go.
God Bless America . Woman works her entire life , has to spend life savings for a nice assisted living community yet will be kicked out because she's run out of funds . Like the daughter said and I think many others in her position would feel the same , 108 years old is incredible! Yet let's please make sure everyone else who have the ability to work but instead chose to milk the system get their FREE Medicaid, SSI, food stamps etc. Let's do a little more investigating cut off the free loaders, give the help to those who are trying but can't make ends meat and protect our Seniors . This happens time and time again and I'm sick of it 😡
I use to work assisting the elderly and I would hope the state she lives in would have a long term assistance like in Arizona. It's up to the family to apply for theses services once they know the money would run out. It generally takes 4-6 weeks for approval. So did the family do this, unknown but I hope they did.
Everyone please realize this happens on a daily basis! There are other places available. They may not be as upscale as what she is in right now, but they are there. Nothing is free!
Why would any nursing ask someone to pay for a year in advance. The nursing home I work for, which is also in Ohio bills month to month. I have never heard of such a thing. I hope this poor woman is able to stay where she's lived for 3 years. The move could kill her.
I don't think most of the people commenting understand that where she's staying is very much a luxury. I work with the elderly and have so much love for them, but the vast majority of the elderly never have the option/chance to get to live at an assisted living facility. They're private and extremely costly. While I understand and definitely feel bad for her, there are millions and millions of elderly people who don't have food to eat, much less the money for even a day of this.
An elderly person who lives with family can be a lot more lonely than if they live in a good assisted living home. If they are social and active, living with family who are busy can seem like a prison sentence.
But yet you have millions of people living off the government that are 100% capable of working but are just too lazy to do so. This woman has put her time in, she should be taken care of. Shame on the facility she's living in. People need to stand up and do more for the elderly
BS, prisoners sit, get Healthcare paid for by us and these seniors, meanls, meds, excercise....all for free for them....this world is so backwards it's not funny. Our elderly should NEVER worry about food, homes, meds, ins, anything....ugh
Assisted living is such a rip off. They want to extract every last penny that elderly people have in order to sustain a decent life and the last remaining years. This should be covered by our healthcare system.
