Nursing homes are inhumane to begin with. The families should of been there picking up there family there. Shame on the families for letting there elders suffer in such a manner
Sickening. This should not be happening in this day & age. If this was my lord one, I'd be so-o-o outraged that you'd have to hold me back from hitting someone!NOT ACCEPTABLE.
There is NO excuse for poor/terrible treatment of elderly persons. They are your parents and Grandparents. MAKE CERTAIN they are being cared for. Otherwise they are rejected and neglected by the staff hired to care for them far too often
Did they have a generator? If not why not? It is typical all over the United States, not just Florida, to have "see no evil, hear no evil", re: many nursing homes. That does not mean all of course, but enough. This storm was terrific in some areas, and it is unfortunately taking some time for the authorities to check up on all medical and nursing home facilities. As an elderly (79), right now I live on my own. The nasty little secret in America is that no one knows what to do with us. Babies are cute. Us elderly.....not so much. Of course there are many families in America that do care about their senior and elderly loved ones. I am lucky in that way. Only when a tragedy like this happens do "the CONCERNED", pop up offering up all kinds of nostrums for the problem regarding us. And in the process taking un warrened political snipes during this crisis situation.
I believe this is the bottom line, why evacuations didn't happen prior to the hurricane. It's a financial decision... A facility can only Bill For Services for each resident if they are in the facility.Once an evacuation takes place the rules regarding Billing for Services are changed. When humans are seen as Billable Services...care is secondary. As CEO s say - It's business, not personal.
"Jack Michel, the sole person listed on the nursing home's corporate registration in Florida, appears to have been accused of fraudulent activity in the past. A person by the same name was among several people who were listed as current or former owners of a Miami hospital and who paid a $15.4 million settlement over an alleged scheme in which the hospital "paid kickbacks to physicians in return for patient admissions,"
There's an underlying evil to all this. So the only person listed on the corporate papers has been accused of fraud before and settled and still can own nursing homes! You know he will just declare bankruptcy. Reform a Corporation under a different name. Open is doors and start defrauding Medicaid and Medicare Etc all over again. Because there are no consequences for his actions. Is shameful how we treat the elderly in America.
Yes it IS extremely hot. Thousands are suffering and even dying now. Where is FEMA handing out ice and water? Where is FPL? Not anywhere I can see -- I drove for 2 hours today and checked 8 stores, no ice. And to everyone telling us to stop complaining about the "first world problem" of having no power: I ask you to try to sleep for one hour in 100 degree heat and no breeze.
This is so sad. Where is the compassion? Absentee owners and overworked, underpaid employees result in tragedies like this. What was the emergency plan? Was there no one they could call and say "hey, it's getting really hot in here, our patients are struggling. Can you get some help for us?"
Let's also remember that when you get to the stage in your life when you are very, very fragile any kind of extra stress can mean the end comes. Of course, extra care needs to be taken of people in that condition but things like a storm are just going to take their toll.
